Introduction

LastPass, which was owned by Marvasol Incorporated, was first released on August 22, 2008. On December 2, 2010, It collaborated with Xmarks, a web browser extension that will enable the synchronization of passwords and ultimately led to a reduction of their paid premium subscription. On March 16, 2016, LastPass developed a LastPass Authenticator to enhance its security features. In that same year, LastPass announced that it already supports user synchronization to any device. Until recently, on August 17, 2017, it announced LastPass Families, a newly-introduced sharing passwords manager available among family members for a premium subscription rate. Given the updates and progress of LastPass, it has now become one of the leading password managers that people use. LastPass is a program that houses your confidential information, especially passwords, in one convenient and safe location which is then accessible through a master password. This password manager allows you to store your usernames and passwords for your various log-in accounts. It stores secured and passwords online, in an encrypted format, which may be accessible via the web interface or plugins. It basically assists you in the generation and retrieval of your passwords across your various accounts that need your log-in information. Moreover, LastPass also does the following:
  • Password generation
  • Assessing how strong your passwords are
  • Password sharing
LastPass is often used by those who are maintaining various accounts online and may have trouble remembering the passwords for each of those accounts. And let’s face it, almost all of us maintain more than one account that requires a password to log-in. Imagine if we have tens to hundreds of it? With LastPass, it allows you to remember these passwords and you don’t have to memorize each and every one of those complex alpha-numeric, case-sensitive passwords that you may have come up with. It is currently used by over 25,600,000 people all over the world. It has a gamut of benefits. With LastPass, one may be able to enjoy the following benefits:
  • It saves you time.
Some people may spend minutes to hours trying to recover or remember their passwords. Especially for those that may involve time-constraint log-in credentials, LastPass can be of great help.
  • It provides you security.
Long and unique passwords are considered to be strong passwords that are difficult to breach by third parties. However, they are the ones that are also hard to remember. With LastPass, one can access these passwords right away. And you can rest assured of its security feature because they are all encrypted.
  • It guarantees convenience.
Most of us maintain various accounts online. There are our social media accounts, bank accounts, email accounts, entertainment accounts, and gaming accounts that require log-in information. Of course, remembering passwords for each of these accounts can be difficult. And you cannot always create one uniform password for all these due to character limitations that may be required in setting up the passwords. With LastPass, all you need to remember is your master password for your LastPass account- and that’s all that there is for you to remember.

Competitors

While LastPass has all the right features for your convenience, there are also various alternatives that one may choose from the list of its competitors. Fairly enough, LastPass is one of the best password managers but other password managers, unfortunately, stack up to the competition. The following are LastPass’ top 10 competitors or alternatives:
  1. Duo Security

  1. OneLogIn
OneLogin is known for its highest-rated features which are the Single Sign-on – Identity and Access Management (IAM) software, Cloud-solution software, and multi-factor authentication software. Advantages

  1. It has an easy user interface.
Overall, at first glance, one can easily understand the UI of the said software. It is not complicated and the colors are not too extreme or flashy.
  1. It provides a friendly tour of your Vault.
While some get so confused about where to find their vault, LastPass has addressed this issue and made everything easier for us.
  1. It assists you in further strengthening your password.
LastPass analyzes the history of passwords you have used in your vault and detects which ones are compromised, weak, or duplicated.
  1. It has another layer of security protection which makes it all the more protected.
It boasts of its multifactor authentication including LastPass authenticator. What more can you ask for?
  1. It has the ability to secure login credentials in banking portals.
This is one of the most unique advantages that you can get if you choose LastPass as your password manager. Not all password manager can intercept the complicated systems of banking portals. But not LastPass. Surprisingly, it works well with such portals which makes it all the more convenient to use.

Disadvantages

  1. It has no automatic import features.
Nowhere in its direct interface can you see an option that allows LastPass to import databases originating from previous browsers or password managers. Unfortunately, you’d have to do it the long way and perform manual database import. You need to go to your “Account Options”, then choose “Advanced”, then “Import”, then hit “Others”. You will then see a new interface that shows what database you need to import. Choose “Generic CSV File”. Follow the prompt and choose the file location. Make sure that once you’ve found the CSV file, open it with Notepad. Paste it on the Content box until you reach “Upload”. Then you’re done.
  1. It doesn’t allow you to log in to LastPass for you to access your passwords.
Perhaps it’s a security thing but somehow, especially when you’re in a hurry, you are not directed right away to your list of passwords. Instead, you are asked to type in your log in details while you are already logged in. Crazy right?
  1. Live support is not available.
Again, nowhere in LastPass UI can you find a button to access live support. So, if you end up actually needing some technical assistance, you’d have to try and do it all on your own until you figure it out.

Support

For contact support, you have to provide your Name and your Account email which you use to login to your LastPass account. This option is available only after exhausting the first step and that searching a resolution or answer to your query by using the search bar or checking the LastPass FAQs. LastPass provides a support tier program for you to be guided accordingly:
